Notify us of a death

How to let the North Yorkshire Pension Fund (NYPF) know about a death.

• Call us on 01609 536335, or

• Use the Tell Us Once service on the GOV.UK website. Just make sure to tick the LGPS (Local Government Pension Scheme) box on the form; otherwise, your details might not be sent to the NYPF.

See below for the information you’ll need to provide when you contact us.

What to expect next

We will:

  • contact the next of kin (that we have been told about) when we are notified of the death
  • ask for a clear photocopy of the death certificate and any other important documents, like a marriage certificate. If further benefits are payable we will request an original death certificate (which will be returned to you). This is not required if you have used the ‘Tell Us Once’ service and selected LGPS.
  • let you know if there are any death benefits payable
  • send forms to claim survivor and dependants’ pensions (where applicable)

We may:

  • ask for information about close family members to help assess if further benefits are payable
  • ask for any other details that we need

If the deceased member was receiving a pension, we will stop all pension payments as soon as possible. If there has been any overpayment, we will start the reclaim process and send you the details in writing.

If survivor/dependents benefits are payable

Once we receive the fully completed claim form(s), and any requested certificates, we will assess any benefits due and write to the beneficiaries.
