Doctors Authorisation Form

When an employer decides to terminate an employee’s employment on the grounds of ill health, they must first obtain a certificate from an independent registered medical practitioner (IRMP).

The definition of IRMP is set out in Schedule 1 of the LGPS Regulations 2013 and prescribes that ‘IRMP’ means an independent registered medical practitioner who is registered with the General Medical Council (GMC) and:

  • holds a diploma in occupational health medicine (D Occ Med) or an equivalent qualification issued by a competent authority in an EEA state; and for the purposes of this definition, “competent authority” has the meaning given by section 55(1) of the Medical Act 1983 or
  • is an Associate, a Member or a Fellow of the Faculty of Occupational Medicine or an equivalent institution of an EEA state.

If a new occupational health service is appointed to carry out ill health reviews or, your existing supplier appoints a new doctor(s), please ensure that the Doctors Authorisation Form is completed and sent to the Fund.
